The practice of architecture has evolved substantially over the years, and with it, the requirements for individuals to obtain their license to practice. From ARE 3.0, to ARE 4.0 to ARE 4.1 to now ARE 50, one thing still remains - the need for testers to continue to develop their critical thinking skills as it relates to the practice. The field is one of the most misunderstood of any of the design professions; those that hire us to design for them do not understand that it is more than just producing a drawing, but rather the complete synthesis of materials as it relates to location based on programmatic requirements for an agreed upon fee communicated through the drawn and written word to a contractor to complete the work. It extends way beyond lines on paper; it is the point at which we decide to get off the never-ending, linear spectrum that is "design." If allowed, a project will never end because like the practice, solutions will continue to evolve. While the dream job of any architect is to be able to explore those options, our clients have budgets and timelines that force us to develop a solution, and to do so efficiently. That is what the exam process is designed to test- the ability for you to develop a solution to a problem efficiently. Undoubtedly, this is the most difficult task that any architect will ever have to complete in their entire career.
